Yesterday, the UK government published the Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI) policy document – a landmark moment for this country, which has never had an incentive scheme aimed solely at supporting ‘green’ heat before. For the UK’s deep geothermal industry, this is a promising start.

DECC’s 2050 Pathways Analysis Report, published yesterday, indicates that the government is at last beginning to take geothermal electricity generation seriously. The report from DECC looks at how the UK can make its transition to a low carbon economy. Among the options listed, geothermal electricity generation makes its debut on the UK’s renewable stage.

The heavy snow around the UK this month highlighted an issue which many energy providers already lose sleep over – that of supply and demand. As the country experienced temperatures well below freezing (even in the usually mild South-West!), energy supplies started to crack up.

Last Thursday the Department for Energy and Climate Change announced the creation of the Deep Geothermal Challenge Fund – meaning that the government has allotted £6 million towards deep geothermal development in the UK.

Last Friday the UK energy’s regulatory body, Ofgem, announced the results of ‘Project Discovery’. The findings won’t make pleasant reading for most people – they predict that by 2020, energy bills in the UK will have grown by 14-25%, and in a worst-case scenario, bills could even swell by 60%.
