08.02.12Greg Barker voices support for deep geothermal

The Secretary of State for Climate Change, talks of his support for the deep geothermal sector.

Greg Barker, the Secretary of State for Climate Change, was interviewed in the most recent issue of the Renewable Energy Association News. In the interview, the Secretary of State underlined his support for the deep Geothermal sector. On the issue of Renewable Obligation Certificates he said that,

“...I'm now turning my attention to geothermal.  I will want to look very closely at the RO consultation responses before we make any decision because while like marine geothermal is a long-term bet rather than a quick win, when you are making decisions against the 2050 roadmap it’s important we make decisions for the long term.”

On deep geothermal in general he went on to say that,

“..there is huge geothermal potential in the UK and I want to see us not only extract that full potential getting into the 2020s but also build up an industrial supply chain for that technology and potentially see it as an important export.”
